How to know a great series

Image
I like to think I’m a fair person so here is a disclaimer; this article will break your heart but you’ll thank me at the end. Additionally, this is not a professional expose like the last work so sit back and enjoy the show. I’ve always wanted to slam La Casa De Papel alias Money Heist but it’s been hard. It is practically impossible to dissect a series that is loved the world over even when the actors are speaking a foreign language. I had almost given up until I found a series with equal appeal and a similar story line; Prison Break. Seeing the show again brought back memories and I just couldn’t pass up an opportunity to pit both shows against each other to see how they measured up. After careful analysis (lots of episode watching into the early hours of the morning), these were the results; ·          Better story-line: Prison Break I’m a sucker for suspense in movies but money heist took too long to let us catch on. Sure, a lot happe...

POWER GENERATION; AN AFRICAN PERSPECTIVE 2

Image
Truth be told, PHED have been doing well over here and I almost forgot what it was like to stay in darkness for weeks on end. Almost… There is just that “something” in the average Nigerian that causes an overlook of past worries and the desire to enjoy immediate pleasures. Sure, it has its benefits as we have a low suicide rate but it also makes us complacent. Small flex and we’ve forgiven our government all its faults. Alas, here ends my political ranting but I will come back to this. The issue that brought me here needs no explanation on my part. If you woke up with light (not generator o) at home this morning, you’re one of the lucky ones. When you consider that an estimated 20 million households in Nigeria are without power, it humbles you and your complaints get fewer. I don’t need to bore you with the facts; ·          How the country is blessed with large oil, gas, hydro and solar resources ·       ...

HOW TO GET THINGS DONE

Image
What exactly do you do when you can’t meet up with deadlines? The excuses you come up with to avoid feeling like an inconsistent human. All the side projects you come up with so you don’t have to think about that missed opportunity to actually get something done   I’ll tell you what I do; I forget about it. Sounds crazy but it’s true. I push the problem so far back in my mind that it becomes just a little blip on my mental radar. If I’m feeling especially creative I create problems, blow them out of proportion and then feel safe that I didn’t “fail” but rather became “busy” (What can I say? The human mind will think up anything to avoid blame)   For those like me who adopt a similar coping strategy, you’ve also been hit with this same feeling; Wake up in the morning, think of the work you have to do, scream and laugh a little in your mind and then get back under the covers cause there are movies to be watched. As perfect as this may seem, it’s not going to last and yo...

POWER GENERATION; AN AFRICAN PERSPECTIVE

Every day you wake up, go to work and no matter how bad it gets you always end with the same prayer; “God, please let there be light” Not to be the antagonist but wishful thinking doesn’t always become electricity cause if it did, we’d have more light-bulbs than humans. Ladies and Gentlemen, let’s talk about power generation, transmission and distribution in Nigeria. That age long achievement that has eluded your motherland (I’m Italian, of course) long before it was called the “Dark Continent”. For those who came looking for quick answers, I apologize. Accept my remorse with this link to my post which you'll definitely love Iyawo ore mi: an Ode to "entanglements"   What I will tell you about is the African dislike for life made easy. Before you start defending your “baby boy” lifestyle and how you need pampering, would it be bad idea if a continent like ours brimming with natural blessings put them to good use? Dear reader, you’d be shocked by what we don’t do ov...

A GAME OF ORIENTS

“Are you going to do it or not?” The words kept bouncing off the walls of Ernie Kashogi's mind at an alarming rate. It would have been easier to pin the blame on someone else but when you have a history of rotten luck, it’s not that simple. He raised his head and noticed that the scenery had not changed; The room was still poorly lit. The faces were still everywhere and nowhere. There was still blood on the floor...   Kashogi was a good guy. No, that may not count for much but it was true. A character who rarely got into trouble and when he did, always found a peaceful way out. He was cautious by nature and never did anything without weighing the pros and cons. That’s why even he could not understand how barely winning the lottery and a free trip to Bangkok he had boarded a plane and headed to the east of the globe.  It wasn’t till he landed and got his bags from the airport that reality washed over him: he couldn’t speak the language. His rush to buy a book ironically titled ...

The Death of Donoghue

His office seemed a lot smaller as the weight of the words hit him. Sure, it was normal to get a letter at work but the contents of this particular note left Michael Donoghue with dread. At age 60 with a bad liver and so much debt, it didn’t take much to drive him off the edge into a fit of paranoia. Once again, Michael looked at the letter in his hand; A plain white sheet of thick paper with carefully hand carved words written on it.  It had no return address and no one else in the office seemed to remember seeing a postman deliver it to his plush corner office. He couldn’t sit still and began pacing across the office, trying to narrow down the list of people who would want him dead.  “Well, It’s not that hard to deduce” he thought aloud to himself “With the amount of debt I’m in, the list goes  from top ranking executives all the way  to the banks” It didn’t occur to him that maybe some poor lifestyle choices had got him here. Perhaps he shouldn’t have fired the do...

Do it Afraid.

What if no one likes it?  What if no one cares?  Is it really worth my time?  Giving more than a moment to spare  I pondered upon all this  Then I became concerned with my flaws  I wasn't built to win Hell, I didn't write the universe's laws I took a stroll down memory lane Thinking how far I had come Knowing how far I could go I knew I wasn't done But then I wondered once more  What do I stand to gain? If I do this right and get no accolades  It will only end in pain  But man is a stubborn creature  A victim of going the other way  I forced myself forward Now look how far I came  But I'll still remember that scared boy  One who didn't know what to do In the face of uncertainty, he kept on moving  You feet may be shaking but you have to move too   - KIDD🍷
